Aluminium

This metal is lightweight and corrosion-resistant and has a lower stiffness level than steel in many conditions. Whilst there are many types of aluminium, the two primary aluminium alloys employed in sheet metal enclosures are 1050 aluminium and 5251.

1050 Aluminium |
1050 aluminium is optimal for many sheet metal projects as it is easy to form and is very malleable so can handle tight radii. 1050 aluminium can be welded by conventional methods and has good corrosion resistance. It is the lowest cost of the standard aluminium available in sheet format.

5251 Aluminium |
5251 aluminium has a higher tensile strength than 1050 so is stronger and harder wearing, it also profiles better on the lasers and is easier to cut with film intact than 1050. Whilst slighter more expensive than 1050 it is generally preferred for sheet metal enclosures due to the increased rigidity.
