Robotics and Automation Magnesium parts are used in robotics for their lightweight and high strength, ensuring efficient movement and durability. |
Magnesium Machining Benefits
- Magnesium have low density but high strength and good rigidity. Such performance is very advantageous for the design of the integral component.
- Magnesium has good toughness and strong shock absorption. It is very suitable for parts that are subject to impact—wheels; magnesium alloys have high damping capacity and are ideal materials for avoiding fatigue caused by vibration and noise.
- Magnesium alloy has low heat capacity, fast solidification speed and good die casting performance. Due to the low heat capacity of the magnesium alloy, the production efficiency is 40% to 50% higher than that of the same aluminum alloy casting, and the casting size is more stable, the precision is higher, and the surface finish is better.
- Magnesium alloys have excellent machinability; magnesium are the materials that are easier to machining in all common metals. High cutting speed and inexpensive cutting tools for low tool consumption

Magnesium Alloy AZ31B - Benefits and Applications |
Magnesium is a very good metal. Its alloy AZ31B is versatile and can be used in many industries because it can be machined and welded easily. It contains 3% aluminum and 1% zinc, which makes it stronger than pure magnesium, dampens vibrations, and protects against corrosion better. Some places it might be found are airplane bodies, laptop cases or camera shells.
|
AZ91D Magnesium Alloy |
Unimprovable Anti-Corrosion Alloy: It contains 9% of aluminium and 1% of zinc, which is the best result for corrosion resistance among all other alloys. Such alloy possesses good strength and ductility with high castability that makes it useful in many fields such as automotive industry, electronics manufacturing or aerospace engineering.
|
WE43 Magnesium Alloy |
A strong alloy that is best for aerospace, defence and automotive industries. It has yttrium and other rare earth materials added into it. The thing about this metal is its strength along with good machinability and high performance at high temperatures too. Some of the uses are in making parts for space vehicles, racing car engines or even missiles.
|
AM60B Magnesium Alloy |
It is recognized that Magnesium Alloy AM60B is highly ductile and has high energy-absorbing properties. It contains 6% aluminum and small quantities of manganese which enable it to be easily die-cast with a good combination of strength and ductility. It is mostly used in the automobile industry where safety is paramount, especially when making safety critical parts for vehicles.
|
ZK60A Magnesium Alloy |
The main reason why magnesium alloy ZK60A is preferred by many people is because it has high strength and can be machined easily. This composite which includes zinc and zirconium among other things, also has high tensile strength as well as good corrosion resistance properties. It is used widely in aerospace parts manufacturing as well as structural applications where it serves multipurpose functions for different types of demanding environments.
|
Magnesium Alloy QE22: a high-quality material known for its exceptional properties. |
QE22 Magnesium Alloy: Silver and rare earth metal containing high performance alloy that is perfect for demanding applications. It has excellent mechanical properties especially when used under high temperatures. Typically found in aerospace components as well as high-performance automotive parts.

How to safely machine magnesium?
Although it might sound daunting, it is perfectly safe to CNC machine magnesium if the right precautions are taken.
Avoid tight clearance angles
Although magnesium can be machined at fast speeds without compromising the quality of the part,
it is best to avoid tight clearance angles, because contact between the tool and workpiece increases friction and cutting temperature.
Maintain proper tool condition
Sharp cutting tools can reduce the fire hazard of machining magnesium.
Dull tools can rub and cause friction, which causes sparks and builds up heat where the sensitive magnesium chips
are being created. Needless to say, sharp tools will also produce better parts.
Most machinists use a carbide cutting tool with a large relief angle for machining magnesium.
Avoid water-based coolant
Although coolants reduce machining temperatures, a water-based coolant can actually increase the risk of a magnesium fire
as it will produce hydrogen gas.Avoid coolant altogether, or use a light mineral oil in place of standard coolant. Compressed air
or argon gas can also be used to reduce temperatures without the risk of exacerbating a potential fire.

FAQs
What is a major safety problem when machining magnesium?
Machining magnesium causes highly flammable chips and dust. This poses a significant fire and explosion hazard.
Why is machining magnesium considered to have machinability?
Magnesium is a material, for machining purposes. It is because of its nature, ease of cutting, and good thermal conductivity. It also tends to produce burrs. This is helpful when crafting light parts with tight tolerances and complex designs. Working with magnesium during machining poses a fire risk. This requires safety precautions.
Why is magnesium challenging to machine?
Despite its machinability, magnesium is hard to machine. This is due to its flammability and low thermal conductivity. Chips and dust form during machining. They can complicate operations and cause fire or explosion hazards. But this only happens if they are not properly managed.
